Death Coming

Death Coming is an isometric puzzle game reminiscent of hidden object games and/or “Where’s Waldo?” where you take the role of the Reaper’s apprentice to claim souls.

TL;DR at bottom.

Gameplay:

Death Coming is a non-linear puzzle game where you must find different and creative ways to kill your targets as well as the general population. You have the ability to control objects in the environment to assist you in the killing of your targets. You must scan the environment and determine the best approach to killing your targets efficiently. This is a great style of gameplay that is exciting and inspires creativity, as well as giving a great sense of accomplishment after successfully killing all of your targets. It can get difficult at times to reach the different goals set for each level, especially with the increased challenge introduced later.

The first few levels are simple as most games are, but the later levels introduce the Agents of Light who are there to prevent you from killing your targets. This new mechanic forces you to avoid doing anything bad while in their line of sight. It adds a new challenge to the levels and forces you to consider your actions more carefully. More angels will appear as you claim more souls, and you have 3 chances to get caught before failing. They keep you on your toes and make the game more exciting and challenging.

8/10

Graphics:

Death Coming has great graphics, utilizing a pixel art style that is very well done. Each environment is unique and beautiful to look at and explore. The sprites look great and the animations are silly and well executed. There are a wide variety of different animations for the numerous ways you can kill people, and they all look fantastic. There isn’t really anything to complain about with the graphics, they’re great.

9/10

Music/Audio:

Death Coming features some fun music tracks that go along with the seemingly whimsical theme that it is presenting itself as. Some of it reminds me of music from The Sims, where seemingly nothing is wrong and all is happy, but it can get messed up badly at any time (like killing dozens of people). The sound effects are also great, each killing tool has its own sound effects (unless it is just a basic thing like a box falling), and there are plenty of different reactions from the people to keep you entertained as you massacre them.

8/10

Conclusion:

Death Coming is a great puzzle game that provides creative freedom and sadistic entertainment all in one fun, beautiful package. There are enough levels to keep you entertained, and they are expansive and unique in their own ways, forcing you to change your strategy and approach to solving the levels. The Agents of Light add another layer of challenge to the levels, making it a more interesting and difficult challenge to reach higher scores and to get better medals. Death Coming is a great little game that I recommend you should play, at least once.

Overall: 8/10 – Recommended
