3089

3089 is a futuristic action RPG with open world exploration and an interesting mechanic.

TL;DR at bottom

Gameplay:

3089 resembles early Xbox Live indie games, which I loved, personally. Now, this doesn’t mean that it isn’t good or is a rip-off of some earlier idea. The game actually introduces some unique ideas that make it a lot of fun. There are quests you can accept to earn credits and experience to buy new items. There are several different shops that you can buy varying types of weaponry from, like guns, energy weapons, and melee weapons. Each type of weapon provides a different playstyle and approach to situations, and are boosted by the class you chose at the start of the game, or if you chose a custom class.

The biggest feature of the game is “time ripping.” Time ripping essentially lets you freeze time for a certain period, depending on how much power you have accumulated once you use it. You can then move freely and shoot lots of bullets at unsuspecting enemies or beat them up with your melee weapon, then resume time and watch them all fall. It is actually a very cool mechanic that was implemented well and taken advantage of properly throughout gameplay.

The RPG aspects of the game are a main focus. The quest system is the primary thing you will be using during your gameplay, but the other thing you will be doing is upgrading your characters skills and gear. Upgrading your character is very satisfying and lots of fun to play around with. There is a surprising amount of stuff that can be done in the world, and each one is procedurally generated for each new game you create.

8/10

Graphics:

The graphics in 3089 are… interesting, to say the least. It seems that it was attempting to go for a pixelated kind of art style, but it isn’t very consistent. Some textures have much more detail than other textures, making the environments look inconsistent compared to other objects. The graphics are still decent, but the aesthetic it seems to have been reaching for was not achieved. The graphics resemble Minecraft in a way, or early Xbox Live indie games that tried to copy Minecraft’s success. The weapons look cool, however.

(Additional note: While playing, I encountered a crash. After restarting the game, all of the textures were glitched and replaced with random colors [see video]. I don’t know what happened, but I just had to fiddle with the graphics settings to fix it. Not game breaking, just strange.)

6/10

Music/Audio:

The music in 3089 is enjoyable to listen to. The music during battles is epic and exciting, and the music during peace is calming and enjoyable to listen to. There isn’t a lot of repetitiveness, at least none that is particularly noticeable. The music is delayed at times, however, which can break immersion a little bit.

7/10

Conclusion:

3089 is a surprisingly decent RPG game. The graphics may be deceptive at first, and they aren’t something to marvel at, but it is a very enjoyable experience. The mechanics of the game are pretty well fleshed out, and you are able to learn how to play more strategically as your progress and upgrade your character. There is a unique enough experience provided through different mechanics like time ripping which allows for a more enjoyable gaming experience. This game is definitely worth checking out.

Overall: 7/10 – Recommended
