1166

1166 is a gritty pixel mystery game with supernatural aspects.

TL;DR at bottom

Gameplay – 1166 is a narrative adventure game with only a few controls. The buttons to move, spacebar to interact with things, and left mouse click to attack. It consists of walking around the environment and talking to people or interacting with objects, reading what your character says in a text box. This is a perfectly fine mechanic, but it can get confusing at times when you can easily repeat the entire conversation on accident by pressing spacebar (which you use to continue through the conversation). Your character walks very slow which can become tedious at times, especially when it isn’t clear where you are supposed to be going.

The game takes some wild turns that I was not expecting from it. There are many strange supernatural levels which can be disorienting, but are still very interesting to experience. However, the game is very buggy. The hitboxes on enemies are, quite frankly, awful, and there are many places in the environment where you can simply walk outside of the level and venture into the endless void. I have seen some people say that the bugginess of the game becomes a feature of it, but I just thought it was strange and unpolished.

7.5/10

Graphics – The graphics are nice to look at. The game has a pretty typical pixel art style, but it manages it well. The colors are very dismal, which I suppose fits with the atmosphere of the game. It can sometimes be hard to discern what is what with the low detail graphics, but it does it well. The effects aren’t very glamorous and there aren’t many animations aside from attacking and the walk cycle for your character.

6/10

Music/Audio – The sound effects aren’t spectacular, especially considering there aren’t many effects to associate them with. There isn’t any sound for basic character movement, which is passable for the style of game that it is. However, the attack sound effects aren’t super fantastic. They work for what it is worth. The music is good overall, and the music during the strange demon sequences fit the atmosphere well. Although, during the uneventful walking levels between locations, the music is only a repetitive 5 second looping background track. It gets pretty annoying after a while but thankfully those levels don’t last that long.

5/10

Conclusion – 1166 is a very interesting game with some strange quirks. It has a typical graphical style but it throws in some unique twists throughout the story. It is pretty riddled with bugs and some things can get relatively repetitive at times, but it is still enjoyable. The interesting story makes up for the places in which it falters.

Overall: 6/10 – Recommended
